GENERAL INFORMATION

There are two main groups of smoking alternatives: heated tobacco, or “heat-not-burn” products, and e-cigarettes.
  • Heated Tobacco Products as a Smoking Alternative:
    Heated tobacco, or “heat-not-burn” devices are smoke-free alternatives. Heated tobacco devices utilize real tobacco that is specially processed, and formed into sticks. The tobacco sticks are then inserted into the device, where innovative technologies heat the tobacco to specific temperatures, but never high enough to cause the tobacco to burn. As with e-cigarettes, there is also no smoke produced with heated tobacco. Some heat-not-burn devices utilize an external heating source, meaning the tobacco stick is heated all the way around, from the outside. In this instance, the tobacco is not heated first; rather, the paper around the tobacco stick is heated first. This may impact the taste. Other heat-not-burn devices, such as IQOS, contain a ceramic blade with gold and platinum. A HEETS tobacco stick is inserted directly onto the blade, and the blade heats the tobacco directly from the core. This allows the tobacco to be heated first, before the paper, which delivers a consistent taste & experience.
  • E-Cigarettes are an Alternative to Smoking:
    E-cigarettes are another kind of smoking alternative, but it does not utilize real tobacco. They are electronic products that heat and vaporize e-liquids instead, in a wide range of temperatures, from 100 degrees C to 250 degrees C. Most utilize a system called “wick & coil”, where the wick draws the e-liquid, which contains flavors and nicotine, onto a coil element to heat it and create a vapor. The vapor is drawn from the device through a mouthpiece. There is no smoke.
    E-cigarettes are also sometimes called “vapes” or “vaping systems”. Some of these have an open tank system that is fully customizable. Other e-cigarettes have closed vaping systems, where they are either single-use, rechargeable, or contain cartridges.
The main difference between alternatives like e-cigarettes or heated tobacco and smoking cigarettes lies in exactly what makes the alternatives “smoke-free”: it is due to a lack of combustion – or burning of the tobacco.

Cigarettes must be lit to be smoked, and lighting a cigarette causes combustion. The lit end of cigarettes can reach temperatures around and above 600 degrees C, causing the tobacco to burn, and it is known that the majority of harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke comes from this combustion.

On the other hand, smoke-free alternatives like e-cigarettes and heated tobacco eliminate combustion all together. With e-cigarettes, there is no tobacco involved, and therefore, no burning. With heated tobacco products, the tobacco sticks used in these devices are heated to specific temperatures without burning it. As a result, no smoke is produced, only a tobacco vapor.
Nicotine is a substance that occurs naturally in tobacco plants, as well as in fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, eggplants, green peppers and potatoes. Many believe that nicotine is the primary cause of smoking-related diseases. Although nicotine is addictive, studies and public health authorities have confirmed that it is not the case; rather, the primary cause of smoking-related diseases (such as cancers and heart disease) comes from the toxins and carcinogens present in cigarette smoke.

When a cigarette is lit, the tip of it burns - or, combusts - at temperatures at or above 600 degrees C, which causes a chemical reaction to occur. Combustion produces over 6,000 chemicals, and many of them are causing smoking-related diseases. This means that nicotine, while addictive, is not the primary cause of smoking-related diseases – it is combustion that causes them.

While the best course of action is to quit smoking all together, if an adult smoker doesn’t quit and is looking for an alternative for cigarettes, it is worth it to consider an option that eliminates combustion. What this means is that it is possible to find a replacement for cigarettes that can offer a tobacco and/or nicotine experience, but without the combustion and cigarette smoke.
The idea of heating tobacco instead of burning it has been around for some time. After years of research and development at Philip Morris International (PMI), it finally came to life, offering our innovative alternative to traditional cigarettes for adults who would otherwise continue to smoke or use other nicotine products.

A cigarette has to be lit in order to be smoked. It burns at 600°C at the tip of the cigarette, but can reach above 800°C during a puff. It is the action of burning that releases most of the harmful and potentially harmful chemicals into the smoke that is inhaled by a smoker.

On the contrary, PMI’s heat-not-burn device IQOS heats up processed tobacco at temperatures of up to 350°C, releasing tobacco flavor with no fire, no ash, and no smoke. By heating instead of burning the tobacco, the IQOS tobacco heating system doesn’t create smoke.
All IQOS heat-not-burn devices work in the same way: first, insert the HEETS stick into the holder. Next, push a button to turn on the heater and then draw on the heated tobacco stick. Once the HEETS stick is finished, simply remove it from the holder and dispose of it in an environmental friendly way.

1. Technology.
IQOS is part of a category of products called heated tobacco. These products utilize innovative tobacco heating systems to heat tobacco instead of burning it. In comparison, vapes – also called e-cigarettes - work by heating and then vaporizing e-liquid, or vaping liquid.

2. Tobacco.
IQOS utilizes tobacco made of real tobacco leaf that are harvested, and then specially prepared and compressed into tobacco sticks, called HEETS. The precise heating of these tobacco sticks works to deliver tobacco flavor, and at the same time, does not burn tobacco. HEETS are not risk free. They are addictive and contain nicotine because it is naturally occurring in tobacco. On the other hand, vapes do not utilize real tobacco; instead, they utilize a vaping liquid available in a variety of flavors at vape shops. Vaping liquids come with or without nicotine.
